Current Funded Project

Low-Cost IoT-Based Beehive Monitoring System

Key Features of the System

  • Monitors hive temperature and humidity to maintain healthy conditions for bees and prevent colony loss.
  • Tracks hive weight changes to estimate honey production and detect possible theft or disturbances.
  • Sends real-time data and alerts via GSM/SMS to farmers’ mobile phones without requiring internet access.
  • Operates on solar power with low energy consumption, making it suitable for off-grid rural areas.
  • Uses low-cost, locally available IoT components, ensuring affordability and easy maintenance.
  • Reduces the need for frequent hive inspections, saving time, lowering costs, and improving honey yield.

Fredrick is currently finalizing his PhD at the United States International University–Africa (USIU–Africa), focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) approaches in technostress mitigation. He holds an MSc in Computer Science (Software Engineering) and a BSc in Information Technology.

Technical expertise includes:

  • Programming: Object-Oriented C++, C#, Java
  • Scripting: Python, JavaScript, R
  • Graphics/Animation: OpenGL, Blender
  • Networking: Cisco (CCNA), Huawei Routing and Switching (HCNA), HSAN.
  • Funded Project: Smart Apiary IoT project/Using IoT in Bee Farming.

Fredrick is a member of the Computer Society of Kenya and is deeply committed to fostering innovation, mentorship, and the integration of emerging technologies to inspire transformative, human-centered learning experiences.
