Dr. Salzwedel Ernest Motsoko Pheko, together with Rev. Dr. Donald Smith and Mrs. Faye Gladys Smith, established ‘Our Africa’ magazine in Johannesburg, South Africa (1958), and later Daystar Publications in Zimbabwe (1964). Dr. Pheko proposed the names ‘Our Africa’ for the magazine and ‘Daystar’ for Daystar Publications. ‘Our Africa’ had a great impact on the African continent, causing unease to the then apartheid regime in South Africa. The ensuing pressure led to the closure of the magazine’s operations in September 1963. On its part, Daystar Publications published Christian literature and other literacy materials in the local languages (SiNdebele and Shona), and in English. In 1966, Dr. Pheko and his family moved from Zimbabwe to Lusaka, Zambia, where he established the operations of Daystar Publications. He lived in Zambia until 1982, when he got various engagements in Britain and the US, later returning to South Africa in 1994. Dr. Pheko visited Daystar University in Kenya on a few occasions. In 1998, he attended the University’s Silver Jubilee celebrations, and in 2012, he was the chief guest at the graduation ceremony. In 2019, he visited Dr. Donald and Faye Gladys Smith.
In his work, Dr. Pheko was highly supported by his wife, Mrs. Nts’iuoa Ntsadi Ellen Pheko.
Dr. Pheko and his wife Ellen went to be with the Lord in 2024: Dr. Pheko in April and Ellen in November.
