About
With more than thirty years of experience designing, managing, and evaluating socio-economic development programmes across Africa and beyond, Professor Robert Gichira has built a career centered on entrepreneurship and governance. He built his academic foundation at Bristol University in the United Kingdom before earning both his master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the United States, specializing in entrepreneurship, governance, development economics, and strategic planning.
His career began at the University of Illinois as a Research Associate coordinating an SME development programme for developing countries, before he moved into a long run of international technical advisory roles with the International Labour Organization in Africa and Geneva, the World Bank and Kenya Government, and the International Finance Corporation in South Africa. From 2010 to 2020, he served Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology as Technical Advisor on strategic planning, university-industry linkages, and resource mobilization, helping establish international campuses in Tanzania, Rwanda, and Nigeria and supporting several JKUAT constituency colleges in becoming fully fledged universities. Since 2021, he has continued this work as Associate and Technical Advisor at Kigathi & Associates, taking on assignments for institutions such as the National Defence University of Kenya, KenGen, the Kenya Association of Manufacturers, and various government ministries and development agencies across sectors including trade, water and irrigation, energy, microfinance, peace and security, and public service reform.
Throughout his career, Professor Gichira has combined this advisory work with applied research, policy development, and teaching, having designed and institutionalized entrepreneurship and postgraduate degree programmes in universities across Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, South Africa, Ghana, and Somaliland, while also supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students and contributing to numerous strategic plans, policies, and legislative frameworks for governments and development institutions.
