In 1988, Dr. James Mwangi Kamunge, a committed Christian and experienced educationist, succeeded Dr. James Mageria as Chairman of the Governing Council of Daystar University College. As the second Chair of the Governing Council, Dr. Kamunge championed the transformation of Daystar University College to Daystar University, a process that culminated in the granting of a Charter by the Kenya Government, in 1994. Consequently, Dr. Kamunge became the first Chancellor of Daystar University and the first Chairman of the University Council, positions he held for 10 years, from 1994 to 2004. This was a period marked by significant growth in academics, infrastructure, and student and staff numbers.
His wife, Mrs. Esther Kamunge, who has since gone to be with the Lord, gave him great support as he served in these various capacities at Daystar University and beyond.
