Dr. Anne Anjao Eboi is the Head of Department and lecturer in the Media and Film Studies Department, School of Communication. Dr. Anjao holds a PhD in Media Management from Universiti Utara Malaysia; a master’s degree in communication studies from the University of Nairobi and a bachelor’s degree in education (English/Literature) from Kenyatta University. She also holds a Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Other certifications are for courses offered by the US Embassy and English Language Professional Association of Kenya (ELPAK). Dr. Anjao has also completed the Professional Development for Teacher Trainers course and Teaching for the Future- Climate Change, offered by the Online Professional English Network (OPEN) and sponsored by the US Embassy Nairobi.
Dr. Anjao’s experience in academia is vast, beginning with teaching English and Literature at Pangani Girls High School. She then taught the same at Riara Springs Academy, and later, Sunshine Secondary School. Dr. Anjao taught English/Literature at the Oxford School, Dubai; Providence English Private School, Sharjah; and Green Hills Academy, Kigali. She started teaching in universities in 2011, beginning with teaching English and Journalism at Mount Kenya University in Kigali, Rwanda. Soon after, she was promoted to head the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, then to coordinate the School of Social Sciences. Dr. Anjao eventually moved to the East African University as the Academic Registrar and Quality Assurance Director, before leaving for Malaysia for doctoral studies.
Besides teaching, Dr. Anjao has significantly contributed to the media space in Kenya and Rwanda through publishing feature stories and opinion pieces for years. Between 2010 and 2015, Dr. Anjao was a columnist with the Standard newspaper in Kenya, writing a weekly column entitled, “Moment with God.” While in Kigali, Dr. Anjao was the editor of The Diva magazine and regularly wrote articles for The New Times, Rwanda Dispatch, and The Independent. She currently runs her blog entitled, PhD Chronicles and volunteers as the social media manager of Greener Spaces Imitative, where she runs the group’s Facebook page.
Dr. Anjao has authored book chapters, journal articles, and short stories. She identifies herself as a passionate qualitative researcher. Besides, Dr. Anjao has through the partnership of Handong-Unitwin Fellowship, developed Academic Writing, Feature Writing and Writing for Business modules for university students, which are currently being used globally. Further, Dr. Anjao is a member of several professional bodies such as the International Communication Association, IAMCR, Kenya Editors Guild, East African Communication Association, Association of Media Women in Kenya, Inspire Pathways Association, and the English Language Professional Association of Kenya. Anne’s research interests are in new/social media, health communication, gender and social justice, gender and film, online content moderation, leadership, general education topics, public relations and corporate communication.
Dr. Anjao has demonstrated championship of community-driven solutions for transformative development through extensive volunteer work in the community, where she works in the International Christian Centre’s Prisons Ministry to bring hope and transformation to both inmates and ex-inmates. She is also a volunteer with Hopes and Dreams Organization in Kilifi County, an organization committed to the widow’s and orphan’s cause and where she serves as a Board member. Dr. Anjao also volunteers her time in environmental conservation by participating in tree-planting and clean-up drives, through Greener Spaces Initiative, an CBO dealing with education and the environment. She is also a member of 1Million Teachers, an international organization committed to improving pedagogy across the nations of the world and is a certified black belt holder with the organization. Dr. Anjao is a certified mentor to other teachers and volunteers her time with 1Million Teachers through an annual mentor-a-teacher program. Besides, she serves as treasurer in International Pathways Association.
