About
CPA, CS Charles Katua Kithandi is a Kenyan academic, finance professional, and administrator with extensive experience in accounting, finance, economics, and higher education leadership. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K) and Certified Secretary (CS-K), with a strong academic background that includes a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, a Master of Business Administration (Finance), a Master of Science in Finance and Economics, and ongoing doctoral studies (PhD in Finance) at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
He currently serves as the Head of the Department of Economics at Daystar University, where he provides academic leadership in curriculum development, quality assurance, research mentorship, and strategic planning at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He also lectures in accounting, finance, and economics, having taught a wide range of courses across diploma, undergraduate, and master’s programs. His teaching philosophy emphasizes academic excellence, ethical leadership, and the practical application of theory to real-world economic and financial challenges.
Before transitioning fully into academia, CPA, CS Kithandi built a strong professional foundation in finance and accounting. He previously served as an Accountant at Daystar University, where he played a pivotal role in strengthening financial controls, improving revenue collection systems, enhancing credit control processes, and supporting major institutional financial reforms. Notably, he pioneered automation initiatives like Automatic blocking of students with balances , automated reminders to debtors with balances, external debt collection engagement, reduction of installment plans from 4 to 3, among others, that significantly improved efficiency and increased revenue collection from 75% to over 90% significantly enhancing the University Cashflow.
A committed scholar, CPA, CS Kithandi has been involved in several internationally funded research projects, supported by organizations such as the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (USA), Porticus International, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ- Kenya) and Windle International Kenya. His research interests span financial performance, corporate governance, financial risk, sustainability reporting, fintech adoption, project management, MSME finance, and public finance. He has published widely in reputable peer-reviewed journals, contributing significantly to knowledge in finance, economics, and development studies within the Kenyan and regional context.
His academic and professional excellence has earned him multiple recognitions, including the Kasneb Prize for Best Student Nationwide in Communication Skills and Report Writing and the Outstanding Performer Award at Daystar University. He is a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and the Institute of Internal Auditors – Kenya (IIA-K), and he has served on several university boards and committees, including the University Senate, research ethics boards, and strategic planning committees.
